04. Beats & Pieces Party

Mid-symposium party @ Star & Shadow Cinema
Tuesday 13th September 2011, 19.30-01.00. FREE ENTRY
In collaboration with Tempo Tempo Gigs.

This mid-symposium party included a great selection of local acts and DJ, going until 1am.
This is the program that was announced:

Brad Field
First up is Jeremy Bradfield (aka Brad Field). He is one of Newcastle’s finest secrets and it’s a mystery why he doesn’t get booked to play on his own more often. Either way, consider yourselves lucky to have the opportunity and come on down to witness it. He plays in various outfits, including Newcastle’s sleazy-and-sweaty-good-times stalwarts SDF. His output as Brad Field, however, is intoxicatingly playful, inventive and upbeat, using any array of shiny toys to create complex yet dancy beats that leave you with no choice but to nod your head and shake your body with a pure “what the hell is this?” idiotic grin on your face.
You can check out one live recording by him here, although it by no means sums up the versatility of his repertoire:

The Ladies of Midnight Blue
And before that we have, The Ladies of Midnight Blue, who are the female component of the band Hannabiell & Midnight Blue. As a duet, they have performed for various festivals, charity benefits, peace rallies, and protest marches. They facilitate music workshops that focus on community building and raising awareness concerning issues of inequality on all levels. Their music consists of powerful and upbeat combinations of percussion, brass, vocal chants, and mbira compositions that creates the perfect party atmosphere and summons audience participation. That evening, the duet will be comprised of Hannabiell Sanders – Percussion, Bass Trombone, mbira, and voice – and Yilis del Carmen Suriel – Percussion, and mbira.

James Joys + The Imposter
Replacing DJ Becky – who could not make it due to unforeseen circumstances – we have tag team James Joys and The Imposter warming up between sets and eventually playing full on dance sets from about 11pm to 1am. James Joys is hurtling through the cosmos at the controls of a small spaceship with the wrong manual, a flask of whisky, and a drum machine. The Imposter will bring back crates of hip-hop unclassics from the dead. Expect to dance.
