ABSTRACT
The economies of the future have tremendous potential to bring greater prosperity to communities, both in the United States and globally, and opportunity to individuals that now find themselves excluded from the world’s economic system.  This future will not come about, however, without the active participation of concerned citizens worldwide, and we intend to explore the structure and function of a digitally-based system with real-world impacts.  Drawing inspiration and principles of good design from an eclectic array of sources like network science, the Linux operating system, the DIY movement, success stories in international development, and the concept of “serendipity,” we propose the development of a “Community Stack” that will both support collaborative, productive economies that already exist and enable further social and economic transformation.  We will present the design for the Community Stack, and also discuss the strategies to measure the proposed system’s success, such as community wealth and resiliency.
